The Cleveland Institution of Engineers serves Teesside's scientific community through its wide range of learned society activities and by acting as the professional body for materials scientists and engineers. The CIE is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the world and has been in continuous existence since it was founded in 1864. We are affiliated to the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and are founder members of the Cleveland Scientific Institution

The ever popular local folk singer performs for the CIE – one night only! Friends, family and non-members welcome. Space is limited so get your tickets in advance!

Vin Garbutt is one of the most sought-after and best loved performers on the music scene today. His song writing is witty and powerful, with a clear social conscience, and he is a distinctive singer, an accomplished guitarist and fine whistle player. Vin has been performing nationally and internationally, non-stop, since 1969. His songs always remain fresh and vibrant, and his repertoire is always changing. Vin is genuinely funny, and his quirky observations of life are always very much part of the act, delighting audiences everywhere.

The Young Persons' Lecture Competition invites students and professionals up to the age of 28 (on 1/6/12) to deliver a short lecture on a materials-related subject. Candidates compete in a series of heats organised by local affiliated societies of the Institute, from which seven regional candidates are selected to compete in the national final. CHANGE TO PROGRAMME Toaster Lecture cancelled Dateline: 5th December 2011
Due to circumstances beyond our control the Thomas Thwaites Toaster Lacture has been cancelled.
To replace this event the CIE is delighted to be hosting a lecture on the groundbreaking Low C steelmaking technology developed under the HIsarna project. More details to follow.

The sponsored lecture takes place on Wednesday 16th November on the subject of "Electric Cars".
The speaker is Ryan Maughan MD of AVID
An electric car will be on display in the forecourt

As part of this ongoing relationship all CIE members are welcome to attend any Stokesley Engineers lecture free-of-charge, and naturally the same hospitality extends to all members of Stokesly Engineers.

Transporter bridge celebrations gather pace! Dateline: 13th October 2011
The CIE is pleased to promote a special event to celebrate the centenary of the Transporter bridge taking place in October.
There is a light show on the bridge every night from Monday the 17th October until Sunday 23rd October
There is music available for people to download onto their mp3 players, which, if they set going at exactly 8:30, will be synchronised with the show.

Transporter bridge lecture added to the 2011/12 programme Dateline: 10th October 2011

The CIE is delighted to announce that, in the centenary year of this iconic teesside landmark, Dave Allan, author of "The Transporter - 100 Years of the Tees Transporter Bridge" will give a presentation based on the history of this famous bridge.

The lecture takes place on Tuesday 13th December, see the events page for more information.
This is instead of the Annual Award presentation, which will not be given this year as no papers of suitable quality were received by the judges.

CIE forges closer ties with the Stokesley Engineers Dateline: 27th September 2011
The CIE is proud to announce that, for the 2011/12 season, we will be sponsoring a lecture in the Stokesly Engineers programme.
