17:30 A1 LOCO PROJECT - How to Build a New Steam Locomotive from Scratch
David Elliot, Director of Engineering A1 Locomotive Trust
In 1990 , a group of businessmen, who were also railway enthusiasts, met and decided to start a Project to build the 50th A1 from scratch.
The public launch of the Project took place in November 1990 to a packed meeting at The Railway Institute in York, followed by further presentations in London and Edinburgh. Since then work has progressed at the Hopetown works in Darlington, and in January 2008 the boiler was lit by the widow of the locomotive designer, Arthur Peppercorn. A boiler certificate has been issued for 10 years of main line running, and work continues.
Articles about the loco have appeared in railway magazines, on the BBC news website, and on “Today” on Radio 4 on Monday 11th February, so it is a topical item! The Locomotive is planned to run on the main line in September 2008.
Members and non-members welcome.
