This year's nominated charity was The Lord's Taveners, who do a lot of excellent work with children in the community.

Below is an extract from their website outlining their aims and the work they do:

We are a Club that unites CRICKET-lovers and other like-minded people with charitable hearts and a love of children. It is an aspirational Club, proud of its heritage and confident of its future, that brings together top cricketers, other leading sportsmen and women, showbiz personalities and leaders from business and the professions. We like to have fun and enjoy the camaraderie of our fellow Members.

The Lord's Taverners started life as a club founded in 1950 by a group of actors who used to enjoy a pint watching the cricket from the Tavern at Lord's. In the early days, the money raised each year was given to the National Playing Fields Association. We now invest our money evenly between supporting grassroots cricket and a range of disabilities projects.

Since then we have developed into both a vibrant Club and a Charity. We have thousands of members who all share a love of cricket and a desire to ensure that as many children as possible, especially those with special needs, have the chance to participate in sport and recreation. We are recognised by the England and Wales Cricket Board as the official national charity for recreational cricket.

Our 'Twelth Man' is HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and we have been led over the years by other members of the Royal Family, two Oscar winners (Sir John Mills and Sir Tim Rice), legends of comedy (including Eric Morecambe), former England cricket captains and even a former Australian Prime Minister (Sir Robert Menzies).

FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGY
How to study the Stone Age in the Space Age
Dr Tim Thompson
Senior Lecturer in Crime Scene Science,
School of Science & Engineering,

Biological anthropology is the study of the human body in order to understand individuals and populations. Traditionally it involves the examination of the skeleton using very simple and basic equipment. Exciting advances over the past few years have allowed us to apply increasingly complex technologies to this subject and unlock more and more information about our collective past, and about how we live our lives today.

17:30 - PROCESS DEVELOPMENT IN STEEL RESEARCH
Dr Gene Donald Spenceley. MBE, PhD, FIMMM

cie founders lecture poster

The progress of a number of research projects are analysed to determine the key factors involved in the methodologies for process development in the Steel Industry.

These include research strategy, generation of ideas, process development stages, the role of pilot plant, intellectual property, staff disciplines, research funding and recording of completed work.

The projects, in which the author was involved, cover experiences as a Project Leader and Research Manager in Mechanical Working and Steelmaking Processes .at BISRA in Sheffield and subsequently at the Teesside Laboratories of British Steel Corporation and British Steel plc. The studies ranged in scope from research to improve the performance of production plant to innovations aimed at complete replacement of existing technology.

The time lapse between completion of the research and the present allow observations to be made on the level of success in deployment of the developed technology.
