Dear Members & Friends of the CIE,

The last of our technical lectures for this season took place on June 10th, and was well received.

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the Barbeque planned for Wednesday July 9th, due to lack of interest.

The next event in our calendar is on Wednesday September 10th, the visit down Boulby potash mine.
There is still one place left on this trip, please let me know by email on events@cieng.org if you wish to go.

PLEASE NOTE:-

  • This is a daytime visit starting at 10am and continuing till 4pm on Wednesday September 10th
  • Participants must be capable of walking 1 or 2 miles in 40ēC temperatures in the event of vehicle breakdown (yes it really is that hot down there...I've been!)
  • Participants must be capable of scrambling on and off a flat back truck (with seating)

If this visit proves successful, we may organise another.

Next year's programme is largely in place, and some early dates for your diary:-

Thursday 25th September - Annual Quiz at Acklam Rugby Club, Middlesbrough 7:30pm - contact Ray on social@cieng.org

Our usual lectures are 5:30pm for tea/coffee & chat, with lecture starting at 6pm.

Tuesday October 14th - Presidential Address

Friday November 28th - Annual Dinner

Tuesday December 2nd - "Hit & Run" - a visit to the Crime Scene House at Teesside University.

Full details will be posted on the website later in the summer.

Message from Stephen Cater of the TWI:-

Might I draw your attention to an event, "Engineering at the Cutting Edge",  being organised by the Sheffield Branch of the Welding and Joining Society. Members of your organisation would be most welcome to attend.

To be held in Sheffield on Saturday, 18th October, the event comprises a day of lectures at Sheffield University using the making of a knife as a theme for a series of talks on metallurgy and its relevance to modern engineering followed by an evening dinner at Sheffield Town Hall. For any attendees staying over until Sunday, Stuart Mitchell, one of Sheffield's last remaining "Little Mesters" (cutlers) will be opening his workshop and demonstrating the techniques required to produce the high quality hand knives upon which Sheffield's reputation for metalworking excellence was founded.

The link below gives access to a downloadable pdf form with further details of the event.
